I have failed miserably to find a clock display in our house that doesn't include a colon in the time display. So I thought Google's Images page might have some and, indeed, there are one or two. Where did you find this "correct" format? AFAICT, adding colons to a string of digits is used as a self-documenting way of indicating it's a time, whether time-of-day or an interval or period.
