"nm-applet" does not appear in .xsession-errors, but there are plenty of other warnings and error messages. Perhaps the failure of nm-applet is a symptom of a more fundamental failure (?).
More involved: if you can't find any trace of the applet doing something, maybe rebuilding the package after adding a few fprintf() calls would help.
I think it is time for a bug report. David
