That's not my experience with them (and I have three in current use, one of which is about to hit the 10 year mark with IIRC nothing but one battery replacement, plus one that's been retired for other reasons). For moderate needs, I suggest to take a look at the APC Back-UPS Pro series. Works fine with apcupsd for all I can tell.
