Homebrew is a term for custom, one-off, or heavily customized. As in
the now defunct Homebrew Computer Club in San Jose, California. I
believe the references to homebrew backup solutions mean custom, not
the Homebrew package manager.

Also, Homebrew package manager packages would likely conflict with
Debian packages in a number of ways, many of them very subtle. I highly
recommend you do not use Homebrew. Much of the Debian advice on not
breaking one's system applies here.
