First you might remove the pktcdvd module: pktsetup -d /dev/sr0 -q Not sure if it causes this specific problem but it is for pre- growisofs CD-RW writing. Nobody uses that anymore and it interferes with "straight" CD/DVD-burning. If the error messages still show up after that it's most likely an unreadable DVD or your DVD-drive is beginning to fail. Usually the tracking lasers in these devices get deadjusted after a few years and readjusting them would be too much effort.
