Thunderbird has Error console. Open it with Ctrl+Shift+J or
Tools > Dev. Tools > Error Console. There might be some error info there.

And that leads to the conclusion tha there is not aDOCTYPE because there is no html just the mime boundary triggers.

Since when does a total lack of html content, disable MIME handling?? That seems like a whopper of a bug to me since MIME was around and working quite well in the later '80's.
