I don't use either KDE or gnome; I keep trying other WMs but always come back to icewm in the end. I do of course use suitable fonts for all those apps that work via xterm but the problem is with the others. However, I had a helpful suggestion from someone on alt.os.slackware, viz to do startx -- -dpi 110 (or whatever). Should have thought of this myself, I suppose...
