I think this thread is confusing two things: the freenode takeover and exodus: protocol stays the same, only hosts change. See here [0] for some background on that. This is a political (perhaps also monetary) thing. (And a reminder that, whenever you design a communications system, you should try to separate carrier from address/identity, but I disgress). And the new IRCV3 ([1], [2], [3]), which doesn't seem (yet) widespread (solanum addresses this latter point). This is a technical thing. Both things havent't much to do with each other.
