What I do in such situations is buy a refurbished laptop. Not as shiny, but one-tenth the price for (perhaps) half the performance. At the moment I'm on a refurbished thinkpad 230, which I topped up with 16 GB RAM and 1T harddisk. Debian... and I'm happy as a clam :) Cheers - t
