Because of the threatened demise of wicd, I've started looking at connman, something you've suggested in the past. The Debian wiki https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse?highlight=%28connman%29 has a few connmanctl commands from a jessie user who had some problem with that old favourite, TL-WN722N/ath9k.
