That can happen if your display has relatively high pixel density (e.g. above 120 dots per inch), but the graphic system (Xorg) by default assumes 96 dpi. Check the output of: xdpyinfo | grep resolution My preferred method to deal with this is to configure Xorg to use the real dpi of the display (typically by telling it to consider the real size of the display when setting the dpi).
