The only way I managed to get my old computer working (also AMD 400mhz) with a ISA SoundBlaster card was to switch to 2.4, after that it auto-detected and worked flawlessly. As for 'too old,' while computers up to and including 166mhz have reached that limit for me, a 400mhz is still quite usable. Currently, I'm only running a 900mhz, my old server was 233mhz and is being replaced by a 400mhz, and I just got a 200mhz server that will become my MP3 server as soon as I can scrounge up the money for 4 18gb scsi drives [1]. But regarding processor speed, 400mhz is fine for most users. I've actually used (if you can call it that) Windows XP on a 350mhz. It was painfully slow, but it ran.
