Thanks a bunch Ben (I'd already tried dpkg -P galeon), but what the hell, it might have made a difference but.......
sudo dpkg --purge galeon dpkg: error processing galeon (--purge): Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal.
