'startx' still fails as does 'kdm'

Run "startx 2>errorlog.txt" and then look in errorlog.txt for any lines that begin with (EE).

As you can see its saying it can't find any compatible drivers for my
Radeon.

Not really; rather, it can't activate certain features/modules.

Also, I removed xserver-common and xserver-xfree86 and installed them
from the experimental tree and discover reported that it couldn't find
any xservers for my particular card (the attached error.log is from
after installing from the experimental tree). It says that driver
version 1.1 is installed (or is it 1.3?) and that 1.5 is needed. :(

(EE) Failed to load module "pex5" (module does not exist, 0)
Skipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libspeedo.a:spencode.o": No symbols found
(EE) Failed to load module "xie" (module does not exist, 0)
(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

If you only have one video card, either comment out/remove the BusID line, or make sure it matches the output of lspci (only remember that one is hex and the other decimal).

(EE) RADEON(0): Failed to open framebuffer device, consult warnings and/or errors above for possible reasons
(you may have to look at the server log to see warnings)

Turn off the fbdev option in /etc/X11/XF86Config if it's on ("true").

(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIScreenInit failed because of a version mismatch.
[dri] radeon.o kernel module version is 1.1.1 but version 1.5.0 or newer is needed.
[dri] Disabling DRI.
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/mouse
No such file or directory.
(EE) Configured Mouse: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Configured Mouse"
No core pointer

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

This looks to be your real problem; it can't find your mouse as defined. You'll need to tinker with the mouse settings.
