As for the latter: these folks [1] (sorry, in German), Freifunk München tinker around with mesh networking to offer free WiFi in the city of Munich (there are similar groups in other cities) and are experimenting with a distributed Jitsi videobridge which reportedly has supported up to 200 sessions.
