I don't know why it works for you and not for me.
I upgraded to the newest stretch kernel (4.9.0-9-686); still boots. I'd be inclined to install stretch on a USB stick; base system only and then GRUB. A booting failure would motivate me to stick with a working kernel. -- Brian.
