Thanks to all who replied, and thanks for the flattering comments ;-) The key for me was needing to do something like logging out and back in -- I haven't added myself to groups very often (if ever) (or manually created a user), and I just didn't think about something like that.
I like to think of myself as competent and experienced, but, with experience (and competence) comes age, and things like forgetfulness.
