This Debian 9 clones fine: Model: IBM ServeRAID M5014 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 998GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Disk Flags: Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 1049kB 2097kB 1049kB bios_grub 2 2097kB 271MB 268MB fat32 boot, esp 3 271MB 998GB 998GB lvm And this one gives the error: Model: DELL PERC H730P Mini (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 4197GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Disk Flags: Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 1049kB 511MB 510MB fat16 uefi boot, esp 2 511MB 767MB 256MB ext3 boot 3 767MB 4197GB 4196GB lvm lvm All my existing VMs across all ESXi hosts are configured with BIOS boot.
I've investigated a bit more and it actually has something to with EFI
rather than Debian version.
