Well, I found where that change happened, in 2006: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/11420211b8123d0e2f71945ad022e8eec28ebfce But that's not very enlightening, because the file that the commit message mentions as the reason for the changes http://www.lanana.org/docs/device-list/devices-2.6+.txt today says "loopback" there. So, I dunno :(
