However, in this specific case it turned out that the problem was 
/etc/nsswitch.conf

working)
hosts:          files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return]  dns

failing)
hosts:          files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] resolve 
[!UNAVAIL=return] dns

Now I just have to figure out how that came to be and which is the 
default configuration.
