About an hour ago I installed zenmap on both my desktop and laptop systems running Buster and Gnome. Both had been clean installs back in October, i.e. not upgraded from any previous Debian installation.
On the desktop starting "Zenmap (as root)" works as expected while on the laptop it fails to start at all. Dependencies and Recommended packages are installed. On the laptop I see the following in /var/log/user.log: Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: No protocol specified Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: No protocol specified Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: Traceback (most recent call last): Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: File "/usr/bin/zenmap", line 181, in <module> Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: import zenmapGUI.App Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/zenmapGUI/App.py", line 157, in <module> Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: import gtk Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py", line 69, in <module> Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: _init() Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py", line 57, in _init Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: warnings.warn(str(e), _gtk.Warning) Jan 3 17:09:16 nomad zenmap-root.desktop[21979]: gtk.GtkWarning: could not open display I get the same output when trying to start Zenmap from a terminal using sudo.
