It is not reasonable to expect that everybody will learn to be a system administrator in order to use a computer. In Stephen's case, the computer is a tool he uses to get his job done.
I see no problem with him focusing on his job instead of learning to be a sysadmin. In this case, he encountered a problem, came here for help and several people were able to help him diagnose the problem and start moving toward a solution.
