Maybe you could then try some of the switches for ps2pdf, for example

$ ps2pdf -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer  old.pdf  new.pdf

"/printer" makes it 300dpi, "/ebook" 150 dpi, and "/screen" 72 dpi, the
documentation can tell you more.
