You don't need pmount. To the best of my knowledge, systemd doesn't
need any additional software. I have a fairly slimline stretch/Xfce as
my drive is only 8GB.

Find out what the problem is. I usually start with mounting problems by
running tail -f /var/log/syslog and seeing what happens when I plug
in the offending item. I then check with fdisk that the thing has a
sensible format. Usually by this stage I can see what is wrong.

I do sometimes find oddities after the computer has woken from standby,
such as mounting failures. But this is Linux...
