Did you think Gmail was a charity? It costs them *money*. They offer it free in order to add value to their advertising services, which are their main business. Of course they mine Gmail for data. "Security" can mean protection against fraud: keeping malware off your computer, preventing your passwords from being broken. It can also mean secrecy: preventing anyone other than the intended recipient from reading your messages.
