I did discover yet another config file in the bewildering web of these fscking things. ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps which contains, in my case [Default Applications] x-scheme-handler/mailto=alpine.desktop Maybe I appended that; maybe it's essential to get this to work, or maybe not. I don't remember. Out.
