Fixed. Deleted PulseAudio and rebooted, looked at aslamixer (no changes), and all is well. IMHO, PA is indeed the spawn of Satan, and everybody responsible for it must be taken out and hanged. And PA must be removed from the Debian installs and burned.
It's really nice that several responders in this thread are happily using it. But here, but it took several hours to get sound back in my headphones. -- Glenn English
