Today gcc-7.3 arrived in sid, which seems to compile the kernel without problems (see my previous post). BTW, getting rid of gcc-8 was a bit of a pita, synaptic was no good for that, had to do # aptitude remove gcc-8-base and follow the second suggestion, which fixed that issue here with a few downgrades to the proper unstable versions.
