You can also use some key combo to switch "groups". For example, I have this in my ~/.xsessionrc: setxkbmap -model pc104 \ -layout "de(legacy),el" \ -option "compose:caps" \ -option "altwin:alt_super_win" \ -option "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp" \ -option "grp:shifts_toggle" That means: two layouts: de, el (that's Greek -- ellenika), the capslock is a compose key (capslock is useless for me, so I can input ♥ by entering COMPOSE + < + 3), the alt windows key has an own code (I use that for all the related window manager "hotkeys", so alt is available for programs), I want to be able to kill my X servr with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, and now it comes: by pushing *both* shifts at once I toggle between German layout and ελλενικά. I didn't know about setupcon, mentioned in this thread. Perhaps it's the better solution (e.g. does it take care of the Linux consoles too? My solution above is X only), perhaps not (e.g. is it as flexible as the above?). Whatever. Lots to play with :-) I'll definitely read on setupcon.
