The most important thing wrt virtualization is, as far as I understand, whether the CPU supports it: if it doesn't you still can virtualize, but it will be slow. Assuming your hardware is X86-based, Wikipedia [1] has a pretty good explanation of the things involved. See for example this [2] on how to find out whether your hardware supports virtualization. Of course, having some RAM helps a lot.
