I'm using multiple drives via /dev/sg* since more than a year. sg never had the Big Kernel Lock which was replaced by a heavy handed mutex in 2010 during a drive-by programming effort. https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-scsi/msg94638.html "sr: Failures to read TAO CD track ends" Meanwhile at least blkid became fixed to work around the kernel insufficiency.
