You need to scape "<" and ">": if [ "abc" \> "dec" ] ; then ... ;fi if [ "abc" '>' "dec" ]; then ... ; fi if [ "abc" ">" "dec" ]; then ... ; fi Delete "dec" file, ( ">" is redirection in bash, so you was creating that file Regards
