Yes, Apple has broken backwards compatibility more than once. It was necessary 
to do to keep up with the inevitable evolution of cpus and storage. But that is 
not the reason for their success. Their success is based on everything Just 
Working, which they accomplish through total control of the hardware. They are 
the antithesis of Debian, which wants to run on anything.
