The Video4Linux2 project (integrated into the kernel for years) provides a generic interface for cameras and other video input. Basically, you should only buy a device with a V4L2 driver, and then everything will work with it. In realtime, one of the best viewers is VLC. You might want a Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150. They are pretty high quality PCI cards with input for composite and cable tuners. These days I expect that they run about $15 or so. Everybody want ATSC... -dsr-
