We are in violent agreement. I added bindfs as an additional
option which might come in handy when syncronizing the UID is
not what you want (getting a medium from elsewhere with an ext4
file system, and which you don't want to change significantly --
i.e. read & add some files but ot bulk-change all UIDS -- comes
to mind).

But it's definitely more work to do it right.

For Richard's use case, synchronizing (if even necessary, as you
point out) seems the way to go.
