I assume, probably making an ass of me, you're able to connect to the
internet through your Ethernet cable?

So you didn't use a wireless network to install, the driver for the
card is the start.

Do you have wireless packages like wpa_supplicant installed?

There are a couple of network managers in Debian. I have never used
network-manager, but years ago I used wicd for a very short time.

Or are you just creating your network connection
through /etc/network/interfaces which is the way I found best and
easiest? Once I realised that was an option.

Apologies, but I don't know the command to discover all the packages
you need for wireless networking. Someone else will be able to suggest
that.
