But xserver-xorg-video-radeon would be the right driver to use. Now you're using the much simpler vesa driver. The Xorg.0.log file shows that X is searching for the ati driver (package xserver-xorg-video-ati) which will then use the radeon driver from the xserver-xorg-video-radeon package.
