I do a 'dmesg | tail' shortly after having inserted the stick. Then I can see the noise the kernel is making after "seeing" it. If you want to tweak what happens after inserting an USB, you might want to tweak the udev rules (for example, I had a backup script fire up automatically at a customer's when a disk with the right label or UUID was inserted).
