This is a very concerning behavior of a program like a
package manager. Something's horribly wrong here.
Doing this seems to cure various synaptic woes ...for me It's worth a
shot and the worst thing that can happen is that you will have a nice
permanent search bar enabled. Let us know if this helps. Ric
