But this does not work reliably (what in German we would call a "Mal-Funktion = mal funktioniert's - mal nicht"). I put the same DVD into a LG harddisk/DVD recorder: recorder takes long to recognize disk then eventually sees it as blank and tries to format it which fails, which in its restricted OS means it tries to format the DVD ad nauseum until manually interrupted by "open tray".
