As far as I can see, this leaves two possible places to look:

* The BIOS, or (more likely in a modern system) UEFI.

* The firmware on the optical drive itself.

Neither is likely to be nearly as accessible, on this level, as the OS
or its userspace, but I can't see where else you could look at this point.
