The audio FAQ on the debian wiki does say that sometimes support for certain sound cards is removed from new kernels due to licensing issues. It is always possible that this is what happened but since there is a module right there in the only 3.x kernal on this system, I think that it is more likely that some sort of bug is afoot. Squashing it will be lots of fun.
