Its an intermittent problem. I commented the lines above and rebooted. Now
it is working via NetworkManager again.
Also, even when it was not working, I could issue the command:
# iwlist wlan0 scanning | grep ESSID
ESSID:"myownnaise"
ESSID:"101ap"
ESSID:"VENTURE"
ESSID:"phaby"
ESSID:"Monyck"
ESSID:"AT&T-7524"
ESSID:"AT&T-4FE3"
ESSID:"AT&T-9382"
