I am trying to install Debian 8.0.0 64-bit under Oracle
Virtualbox (current version) and it persistently fails at the 'Select and
install software' step.

I've tried using the DVDs and the Net install variants but
it makes no difference.

I have previously installed numerous earlier versions (e.g.
7.8.0) without any difficulties.

When you get to this step it presents you with a minimal
menu, according to the documentation the selections made at this point
should have no effect on the eventual outcome,

I have always selected the first one which is listed as
'basic system' or 'desktop' or something of that nature.

I have tried selecting no GUIs, Gnome and LXDE on separate
occasions, the result is always the same. I primarily selected Gnome, as
that's the one I'm used to but also tried LXDE because I'm familiar with
that too.

I have always unchecked 'print server', as I don't require
it.

I have always selected the bottom one 'standard utilities'
or something to that effect.

Get the feeling it's rather more fundamental than which
options I select? Any thoughts?
