Hi gang, Thanks for your help. In the end, i believe the problem was the RAID5 configuration that had been set up for windows. I used killdisk to scrub the hard drives, then was able to use gparted (which had hung previously) and then install debian. I'll reuse the disks with LVM and go to backups instead of RAID.

Download either one, run GParted and make a partition on your hard drive. Make it bootable. Then try installing the Debian OS.
