Harvard's CS50x (Harvard's idea of an Introduction to Computer Science) is very good. There's CS theory, not anywhere as thorough as MIT's, I gather from the 'Net, but it includes quite a bit of hands on C coding, and it's one of the free ones. Get a K&R and a snappy connection to the web. And to do this course, you need a reasonably modern computer to handle the virtual Ubuntu/XFCE machine they provide (for Linux, Mac, or Winders).
