debian-user:I think the problem is that the motherboard/ BIOS (Intel D865GBF, circa 2005) is just too old to use a USB flash drive (SanDisk Ultra Fit 16 GB USB 3.0) as the system drive. When I connect the same drive to a newer motherboard (Intel D945GNT, circa 2009), GRUB is happy.
