Thanks, I know this. But please note that this branch of discussion
originates from 'If I'm supposed to do without X, how do I go to
terminal only login?' OP's question.

I find it highly unlikely that OP changed his XKBOPTIONS (as defined in
/etc/default/keyboard) to include 'terminate:*' entry. So I assumed
defaults.
