OK; it needn't even be session specific really. One of these might work.
peter@dalton:~$ grep -e -layout -e -config /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
# xserver-layout = Layout to pass to X server
# xserver-config = Config file to pass to X server
#xserver-layout=
#xserver-config=
Or the contemporary solution; buy a big flat display.
