The 15" one (the Debian 6 LTS one with which the external monitor
works), has an nVidia GEForce GT520M.

I was wrong (although I doubt that it affects this problem) - the CPU
in that system, is an i5, not an i3.

The 17" one (the Debian 7 one with which the external monitor does not
work), has an NVidia GEForce GT750M.
